Gum disease or gingivitis is caused by the accumulation of plaque and calculus (tartar) around the teeth and gums. The first sign of gum disease is bleeding from the gums when you brush your teeth. Advanced gum disease can also be treated by our hygienists over several sessions to help you keep your own teeth for as long as possible.
Gum disease can be prevented by
a) Thorough scaling carried out by the hygienist, and
b) Thorough plaque removal using a toothbrush, interdental brushes and/or floss.
At our practice, a visit to the hygienist lasts for 30 minutes. During this time the hygienist will scale your teeth removing calculus and staining. Your hygienist will also offer advice and demonstrations on how to clean the teeth and gums in order to keep them healthy.
Failure to give at least 24 hours notice or failure to attend will result in the full cost of the appointment being charged.
Periodontal (gum) disease is the number one cause of tooth loss amongst adults. This is because a certain number of people (15-20%) have immune systems that overreact to the bad bacteria in their mouths. When this overreaction occurs, the immune system attacks and breaks down the bone and tissue that surround the tooth. This destruction is not predictable and can occur sporadically. Unfortunately, we can’t usually feel or notice the onset of gum (periodontal) disease. Both adults and children should be routinely checked for gum disease.
